Federal, state and local educational policy plays a major role in creating effective and equitable educational systems. Education being an instrument of change, in Nigeria education policy has been a product of evolution through series of historical developments.
Over the years, Nigeria has expressed a commitment to education, with the belief that overcoming illiteracy and ignorance will form a basis for accelerated national development. Despite its potential for leveling opportunities, education is pathetically used to perpetrate inequalities. Millions of poor people are still being excluded from the processes and outcomes of education. However, regardless of the irrefutable evidence that education is crucial to the development of the community and the nation, there remain inequalities in access to education in Nigeria.
Compliance with education policy dictates many of the actions of school at federal, state and local levels that ultimately affect students’ day-to-day education. It is important for policymakers to understand the results of education policies to ensure better educational outcomes for students. It is government’s wish that any existing contradictions, ambiguities, and lack of uniformity in educational practices in the different parts of the Federation be removed to ensure an even and orderly development of the country.
